Event Description
The Memorial Day weekend event in the Midwest! Michael Stern conducts a spectacular patriotic concert by the Kansas City Symphony, presented by Bank of America. Special tribute to Viet Nam vets. This free performance is followed by Kansas City's largest fireworks display. Picnic on the north lawn of the National WWI Museum at Liberty Memorial while enjoying fabulous pre-concert entertainment. Bring your family and friends to Union Station for a Memorial Day celebration as unique as Kansas city! Blankets and lawn chairs welcome. Yes, hot it was! - but did get better after sunset, as Greg said. The worst part for me was when the fireworks started, some dummies decided to stand up on a wall in front of us and block our view! There wasn't any sense to this as there was no one in front of them - they could have stayed seated like the rest of us - but they stood the whole time. I did ask several to sit down who were close enough to hear, and they did right away, but not the ones further away who were the worst offenders. Oh, well - still a great event - good music, a nice program honoring the vets from all branches of service as well as those who gave their lives, and fantastic fireworks (what we could see, anyway!) Now it's 1am and I'm off to bed!

It was hot! The evening was nice after the sun went down and the wind continued to blow. KCPT usually broadcasts the event on Independence Day so you can enjoy it at home in the A/C!

Sorry Sally, didn't realize it was going to be so humid and sunny...have a great time. We can't make it, dad has been in the hospital for the last week, and we are exhausted...just chilling for awhile...maybe next year.

Hey Karen - what was that you said about sunscreen? I'm hoping to be there by 6 as it fills up fast and the sun will be hot, hot, hot! Whew! I just KNEW we'd go from winter to summer - yesterday wet and chilly, today scorching!

It IS a fun event! I've attended for the past 3 or 4 years and it is such fun to hear and sing along with all the patriotic music! They honor each branch of service, too, and the vets stand as we thank them and their service. And the fireworks display above the WWI Memorial at the end is the best in the area! I always leave feeling so proud of my country!
