The Westboro Baptist Church has confirmed with the Topeka Police Department that they will be on-site and counter-protesting the upcoming rally for religious freedom on Friday. So, the good news is we know ahead of time.Fred Phelps and his WBC congregation thrive from shock, vulgarity, and “getting a rise out of people.” I expect the very worst of anti-Catholic placard messages. The signs are provocative, to say the least.) The best possible means of handling the situation is total and absolute non-engagement. In other words, all rally participants ought ignore them flatly—no matter how difficult or how flustered they might become. If there is a confrontation between rally participants and the WBC, then media will most certainly feature this in their stories and dilute the basic message of the event.
