As a citizen of this nation I have always been taught that it was not only one of our rights but that it was a responsibility. Voting was something given to us by our constitution allowing us as a free people to select our leaders. These elected leaders then speak for each of us, in our legislatures, both state and federal. This simple tool has made this nation the most envied nation in the world.
However in the last decade or so, it has been common for non citizens to vote and thereby take away one of our most sacred rights. In effect, canceling out the votes of not only of citizens who have lived all there lives here but those who have come to our shores, spent the time to become citizens, and embrace our way of life.
Citizenship carries with it responsibility, respect of the law, duty to country and the desire to be a participating member of our great country. Allowing non-citizens to vote basically says, “We don’t care, do what you want, forget the law”.
In the last few years a number of states have tried to pass laws requiring a voter ID. These issues have been fought by a large number of people, even some of our legislators. I do not favor a federal ID, however I do feel there ways for each state rectify this issue. The simplest way is to place the designation of “CITIZEN, or NON-CITIZEN” on our drivers licenses, or non-driver identification cards. This would be a giant step towards our securing our constitutional rights in the voting booth.
