The Gathering Storm
Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in justice.
Isaiah 32:1
A well-known politician held strong views about military preparedness. He was convinced that another country was planning an attack, but almost everyone considered his views crazy. Colleagues said he was “utterly unreliable in his mental attitude,” a “menace,” “washed out” and had “nothing to offer.” And those were his friends! When he gave speeches to call for a stronger national defense, he was jeered and shouted down to the extent that he sometimes had no choice but to leave the platform.
The politician’s name was Winston Churchill, and in the end his fears about Germany and the Nazis proved to be prescient. Once mocked and dismissed, he became prime minister of Great Britain and saved the nation from destruction. Churchill recognized the evil designs of Adolf Hitler when everyone else considered him harmless.
America needs leaders of similar vision today, because the gathering storm threatening the freedoms of Christian Americans is as dangerous – or more so – than those posed in Churchill’s day. On this National Day of Prayer, intercede for the President and his advisors, that they would recognize evil and seek to end it.

2012 NATIONAL PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Every good gift and perfect gift comes from You. You are a faithful God and Your mercy endures forever.
You have promised to bless the nation that trusts in You. Our currency proclaims “In God We Trust,” but in our culture we are far from You.
In the words of the prophet Daniel, “We have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments.”
We come before You once more, seeking Your forgiveness and mercy. You, O God, are our only hope… Hear our prayer and, for Your honor’s sake, shine Your face upon this nation.
Give our leaders the desire to seek Your wisdom and the courage to follow Your guidance… and watch over the men and women of our armed forces as they sacrifice for the cause of freedom.
We give You thanks for all You have done for us, and we earnestly pray that You will help us become, once again, a nation whose God is the Lord.
In the name of Your Son, and our Savior, we pray this prayer.
Amen

Comment by Ruth Christian on May 3, 2012 at 8:19am This story about Churchill lends context to a quote of his you used recently on your quote of the day. "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill It impressed me so much that I added it as a signature line on my email - mainly so I would see it often and not forget it! We need leaders like this that will inspire courage in all of us.
