Steve, if you indeed read my post all the way through, you would've seen that I did agree with you on that point. No need for further lectures.
Misunderstandings arise when folks jump the gun on what they think other folks say.

You do realize that if we would have let Israel take care of Iran the way she wanted to deal with Iran back in 2001, Iran wouldn't be anywhere near a weapon today (because their main reactor site at Natanz would have been bombed out of existence by Israeli jets)?
And you also know that, by some estimates, Israel possesses over 200 nuclear warheads? I think that with that arsenal at their disposal as well as one of the largest active duty military forces in the region, Israel could definitely stand up for herself - if we just got out of her way.

Comment by Kim Quade on August 15, 2011 at 3:48pm Chairman O would be more than happy to throw Israel to the Islamic wolves, in my opinion. I personally don't believe he is a Muslim, nor do I believe he is truly a Christian. However, look at the deference he publicly affords any country or groups allied with Islam, and you can tell where his loyalties lie. Don't forget that he spent several years in Indonesia with a Muslim step-father.
As for Israel, Steve is correct in that we can hinder her by not allowing her to act in her own best interests. We have advised Israel to hold her fire for the sake of peace, when perhaps flexing her muscle is what she needs to do.
That being said, treating Iran as just another country -- like India -- who wishes to develop and maintain nuclear weapons in its arsenal, is foolish and naive. It's Neville Chamberlain redux. Sorry Steve, not with you on that one.

Comment by Steve Shute on August 15, 2011 at 1:23pm Everybody,
We are broke, you know. Even if we want to buttress Israel by giving her tons of aid, we can't afford it, and it will all go away if we can't even pay our own bills.
Are we also in favor of giving Israel's enemies twice the amount of foreign aid than we give our "staunchest ally" in the Middle East?
We should allow Israel the full amount of flexibility that she needs to defend herself. As with all aid from our federal government, aid to Israel comes with strings attached... and most of those strings hurt Israel's sovereignty and her right to self-determination.
Members of Israel's own Knesset (lawmaking body) do not like the fact that Washington is trying to tell Israel what ... when it comes to their foreign policy. This has everything to do with the fact that we give in excess of $3 billion yearly to Israel, and so Washington feels they can dictate to Tel Aviv. This is flat-out wrong.
At the same time, we are giving over $7 billion in aid to countries that, either in the past or currently, have pledged themselves to the destruction of Israel - countries such as newly-Muslim Brotherhood-controlled Egypt ($1.558 billion), Jordan ($682.7 million), Palestinian Authority ($550.4 million), Lebanon ($246.3 million), Yemen ($106.6 million), and Morocco ($42.5 million), among many others (including Iran and Saudi Arabia).
From 1950-1970, we actually gave almost twice as much in foreign aid to IRAN ($2.15 billion) than we gave to Israel ($1.26 billion). Guess that turned out great for Israel, huh?
(You can find all of these stats here.)
We need to get our nose out of the Middle East, and support Israel by allowing her to do whatever she wants to her enemies. We actually hinder her by getting into her business.
As for the sticky oil situation, we need to take care of our own interests by drilling here, drilling now, and utilizing all means at our disposal (including natural gas and emerging technologies like hydrogen fuel cells) to get us to energy independence as soon as possible.

Comment by Kim Quade on August 15, 2011 at 12:19pm Attempting peace with a religious fanatic like Ahmadinijad, a nut who believes the Twelfth Imam's presence is imminent, and that his appearance will bring the destruction of Israel and the conversion of the entire world to Islam -- yeah, let me know how that works out.
In the meantime, I will also stand with Israel, and support Allen West's opinion.
